About the job

In this role you will:

  • lead and/or coordinate the overall environmental component of transportation planning, design, construction and maintenance projects and ensure conformance with environmental legislation, policies and procedures
  • participate as the environmental expert on transportation project teams and provide environmental and process expertise to project managers including advice on the environmental assessment process
  • provide advanced technical expertise and advice regarding Ontario’s flora and fauna, assessment of environmental impacts of transportation projects and mitigation recommendations, and compliance with environmental legislation including authorizations to complete work
  • provide environmental expertise and input into development and updating of internal environmental policies and guidelines through participation in provincial working groups
  • provide technical expertise and advice to management to support decision-making through development of briefing materials and delivery of presentations
  • develop and deliver training to staff
  • engage and consult with Indigenous communities, stakeholders, regulatory agencies and the public through correspondence and participation in meetings, including those which deal with controversial issues
  • evaluate the work of service providers including evaluation of technical proposals, review of environmental deliverables including technical reports, and input into performance appraisals

NOTE: You will be required to travel to areas not accessible by public transit.

What you bring to the team


Environmental Knowledge

Environmental Knowledge

  • education and/or experience in a related environmental field
  • you have demonstrated knowledge of current principles and practices for environmental assessment and protection in Ontario and related environmental legislation, regulations and policies
  • you have advanced technical knowledge and experience working with Ontario’s flora and fauna


Transportation Planning Knowledge:

  • you have knowledge of transportation planning and design and the federal and provincial environmental approvals, permits and agreements that may be necessary to proceed to facility construction
  • you have demonstrated knowledge in identifying impacts associated with facility type, location or design alternatives and their impacts on construction, operation and maintenance
  • you have demonstrated experience in incorporating environmental avoidance, mitigation, compensation and enhancement into transportation planning, design, construction and maintenance


Analytical and Organizational Skills:

  • you have analytical, evaluative, problem-solving and interpretive skills to provide advanced technical advice regarding environmental assessments and to resolve complex issues
  • you have planning, organizational and project management skills to carry out multiple complex assignments on tight schedules with competing priorities under minimal supervision


Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • you have excellent oral and written communication skills to prepare correspondence and reports, explain technical information and make presentations.
  • you have excellent interpersonal skills and negotiation skills to undertake public and agency consultation, participate on multidisciplinary teams, and to build and maintain effective working relationships.
