Role Description

The EHS Specialist is responsible for establishing, implementing, and continuously improving the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) management system for a startup pharmaceutical and natural health products manufacturing facility. This role ensures compliance with applicable OSHA / provincial OHSA, WHMIS, EPA / environmental, Health Canada, and GMP‑related safety requirements, while proactively building a strong safety culture across all operations, laboratories, maintenance & facilities, warehouse, and manufacturing areas. The EHS Specialist will act as a hands‑on subject matter expert, advisor, trainer, and internal auditor, supporting safe, compliant, and sustainable business growth.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the company’s EHS policies, procedures, and programs aligned with OSHA / provincial OHSA, WHMIS, EPA, Health Canada, and GMP expectations
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all EHS regulatory compliance matters, inspections, and audits
  • Conduct hazard identification and risk assessments (JHAs, chemical risk assessments, ergonomic evaluations)
  • Establish and maintain chemical safety, SDS management, labeling, and storage programs
  • Oversee environmental compliance, including waste management (hazardous and non‑hazardous), emissions, spill prevention, and sustainability initiatives
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, CAPA development, and preventive actions
  • Develop and deliver EHS training programs for employees, contractors, and visitors
  • Implement and manage emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire safety, spill response, and first aid
  • Ensure compliance with PPE requirements, machine guarding, and safe work practices
  • Support GMP‑aligned safety practices in manufacturing, packaging, and laboratory operations
  • Perform internal EHS audits, inspections, and compliance gap assessments
  • Maintain accurate EHS records, logs, reports, and regulatory documentation
  • Collaborate with Operations, Quality, HR, Warehouse, Maintenance and Engineering to integrate safety into daily operations
  • Support facility design and scale‑up activities from an EHS perspective for new equipment and processes
  • Track and report EHS KPIs, trends, and improvement opportunities to leadership

Core Competencies & Qualifications:

Technical & Regulatory

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA / Provincial OHSA, WHMIS, EPA/environmental regulations
  • Working knowledge of pharmaceutical and NHP manufacturing, including GMP‑related safety expectations
  • Experience with chemical handling, hazardous waste, and spill response
  • Familiarity with ISO‑based systems (ISO 14001 / ISO 45001) is an asset

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to build EHS systems from the ground up in a startup environment
  • Strong risk assessment, problem‑solving, and root cause analysis skills
  • Effective trainer with the ability to communicate safety concepts clearly at all levels
  • Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and self‑directed
  • Comfortable working both strategically and hands‑on in operations

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 3–5 years of EHS experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical, food, or NHP manufacturing
  • EHS certifications (e.g., CRSP, CSP, CHMM) are preferred but not mandatory in a startup phase

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $50,000 – $60,000 per year
