The Jr. Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) Specialist / Technologist / Engineer is responsible for developing and supporting the execution of MPD programs, interfacing with both present and prospective clients, and contributing to engineering department projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preparing quick look (QL) assessments (preliminary MPD programs) for operator clients, evaluating the application of MPD equipment and services for specific wells or drilling campaigns.
  • Develop detailed MPD programs, including wellbore hydraulics modeling, for applications such as narrow-margin wells, sour wells, sensitive formations, and performance drilling.
  • Specify appropriate MPD equipment and operating parameters aligned with client objectives and design constraints.
  • Develop rig layouts and P&IDs, including equipment placement, piping tie‑ins, and rig zone classifications.
  • Perform pressure drop calculations for interconnecting piping systems.
  • Develop MPD well control matrices and kick‑response scenarios in compliance with regulations and company standards.
  • Participate in or support HAZID, HAZOP, and MOC processes as required.
  • Ensure compliance with client safety, technical, and operational requirements.
  • Interface regularly with client engineers, drilling superintendents, field personnel, and third‑party service providers.
  • Support development and delivery of MPD training materials for office and field personnel.
  • Providing ongoing technical and operations support, monitoring real‑time operations (RTOC) to ensure adherence to the MPD program, maintaining field reporting documentation, and generating technical reports.
  • Schedule flexibility is required in this role to support operator client needs with regards to drilling operations.
  • Provide real‑time operational support (RTOC), ensuring adherence to MPD programs and assisting with troubleshooting. RTOC and On‑Call shift normally require availability or constant attention to operations outside normal office hours.
  • Maintain field documentation and reporting, including generation of technical and end‑of‑well reports.
  • Participate in after‑action reviews to capture lessons learned and best practices.
  • Travel to client locations to support field operations as required.
  • Working with management to identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives throughout the engineering department and broader organization.
  • Exemplify the corporate B.E.S.T P.R.A.C.T.I.C.E.S in all aspects of their work.

In addition to the above responsibilities, the successful candidate should possess the following qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or technical diploma from an accredited university (Petroleum Engineering preferred).
  • 0-3+ years of direct MPD or engineering experience focusing on drilling.
  • Eager to learn and ability to collaborate and work well within a team.
  • Highly motivated individual with the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Proficient in Excel with knowledge in Visual Basic and the ability to write macros.
  • Well Control, H2S Alive, First Aid, and other industry safety/field tickets.
  • Drilling & Completions field experience is considered an asset.
  • Eligibility for enrollment in APEGA, ASET, or other professional association.
