The Engineering Director will play a pivotal role in the development of New Build opportunities, project engineering strategies, and Nuclear New Build roadmaps, for Small Modular Reactors (SMR), CANDU Reactors, and its supporting facilities.
This position involves overseeing engineering activities, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and driving innovation in plant design and construction. The ideal candidate will have extensive Front End Engineering Design (FEED) experience in industrial and major infrastructure projects related to nuclear facilities, oil & gas facilities, power generating facilities, or chemical processing facilities with strong knowledge in project management, and team leadership.
Experience or understanding of the regulatory processes with the Impact Assessment Agency and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is valuable.
This role will be based in Mississauga, ON or Pickering, ON.
Your role within the team:
Leading the engineering team, providing guidance, mentorship, and support.
Oversee the day-to-day engineering operations, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget.
Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment.
Provide leadership and coaching to management roles and senior professional staff executing commercial and internal work packages and projects.
Be accountable for the performance and results of multiple related teams.
Manage the design, development, and implementation of projects.
Ensure all engineering activities comply with regulatory and industry standards and safety protocols.
Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including the internal organizations, client, sub-contractors, constructors, and operators, to ensure seamless project execution.
Provide technical leadership to a multi-disciplinary team in the areas of design, engineering, and general consulting activities for New Build opportunities.
Stay updated with the latest advancements in New Build methodologies, nuclear technology and integrate new innovations into project designs.
Stay updated with latest applicable technical standards and regulatory requirements.
Conduct technical reviews and assessments to ensure the highest standards of quality and safety.
Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure all engineering activities adhere to local, national, and international regulatory requirements.
Liaise with regulatory bodies to obtain necessary approvals and certifications.
Develop and implement quality assurance and control processes.
Work closely with Project Managers and Project Directors to communicate engineering progress and technical details to stakeholders, including senior management, clients, and regulatory authorities.
Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders to support project goals.
Work closely with Project Managers and Project Directors to forecast resource demands for the assigned work scope, including skills, capabilities, and durations.
Define the structure of the project engineering team for their scope of accountability, including reporting relationships.
Hire and release staff, secondees, and contractors from the team as required.
Negotiate with other Engineering Directors to optimize the use of available staff.
Provide oversight for onboarding of new staff and training.
Ensure qualified and appropriate staff are working on the project and are assigned work within their experience and skills.
Organize and direct the development of project-specific training courses as necessary.
Mentor and/or organize mentoring of staff to maintain and improve staff performance and capabilities.
Ensure all project training and qualification records are up-to-date, and required training and qualifications are completed/updated on time.
Help staff set SMART objectives aligned with project demands.
Work closely with Project Managers and Project Directors to track, analyze, and develop/execute plans to improve project targeted Key Performance Indicators and objectives.
Staff Performance and Performance Reviews:
Drive accountability by providing clear expectations and performance measures, meaningful feedback, recognizing and rewarding achievements, and taking disciplinary steps when warranted.
Develop and implement corrective measures to improve the performance of individuals.
Provide feedback and effective recommendations into functional hire/fire processes.
