GEI Consultants Inc. is seeking a highly motivated ecological intern that will support the natural heritage team in various aspects during their summer co-op term. Ecological interns will assist with conducting field investigations, obtaining permits and reporting. The successful candidate will gain exposure to and mentorship from leading technical experts in terrestrial and aquatic ecology. The selected individual is required to spend a minimum of two days a week in either the Hamilton, Markham or Guelph Office.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

Collate information from various sources, including communications with agencies and stakeholders, to establish baseline conditions

Assist with wildlife surveys, including reptiles, amphibians, bats, birds, terrestrial crayfish, fisheries and Species at Risk (SAR)

Support vegetation and wetland surveys, including Ecological Land Classification (ELC) mapping, Ontario Wetland Evaluation System surveys, species taxonomy, and rare plant identification

Data management, processing and interpretation of field results to assess for presence of SAR, significant natural heritage features, and other environmental considerations

Work with other technical staff and project managers to provide input to natural heritage assessments, inventories and impact assessments, technical correspondence, Endangered Species Act permitting and registrations, and project reports

Minimum Qualifications

Completion of, or progressing towards, a degree in biology, ecology, environmental science or related discipline;

Able to work in a team and independently;

Strong written and verbal communication, organization, and time management skills;

Proficient with MS Office 365 (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint);

Resident of the Greater Golden Horseshoe Area; and

Valid driver’s license and vehicle access is required.
