Job Summary:
The Daycare Cook is responsible for planning, preparing, and serving nutritious meals and snacks for children in accordance with dietary guidelines, licensing regulations, and the center’s policies. The cook ensures proper food handling, cleanliness, and kitchen organization at all times.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Meal Preparation & Planning
- Prepare and serve daily meals and snacks based on a rotating menu that meets Canada’s Food Guide (or local equivalent).
- Modify meals as needed to accommodate allergies, sensitivities, or dietary restrictions.
- Ensure portion sizes are appropriate for each age group.
2. Health & Safety
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness in the kitchen and food preparation areas.
- Follow all food safety and sanitation regulations (e.g., Public Health).
- Ensure proper storage and labeling of all food items.
3. Inventory & Budgeting
- Monitor food and kitchen supply inventory.
- Prepare grocery lists and order/purchase items as approved.
- Avoid food waste through proper planning and storage.
4. Compliance & Documentation
- Maintain accurate records of menus, food temperatures, and cleaning schedules.
- Ensure the kitchen meets licensing and health inspection standards.
- Participate in annual health inspections and licensing visits.
5. Communication & Teamwork
- Communicate with staff about meal schedules, children’s dietary needs, and special events.
- Collaborate with educators for classroom celebrations or cooking-related activities.
- Build positive relationships with children and staff.
Qualifications:
- Experience cooking for groups, preferably in a childcare or institutional setting.
- Knowledge of food handling regulations and child nutrition guidelines.
- Valid Food Handler’s Certificate.
- Ability to follow a set menu and adapt as needed.
- Organized, reliable, and able to work independently.
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Check.
- First Aid and CPR level C
Working Conditions:
- Must be able to stand for long periods and lift moderate loads (e.g., groceries).
- Work typically occurs in a busy kitchen with occasional interaction with children and staff.
- May be required to assist during special events or field trips.
Job Type: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 12 months
