JOB SUMMARY
The Municipal Design & Construction unit manages the environmental assessment, design and construction of the municipal infrastructure program; coordinates the preliminary, functional and detailed designs, preparation of contract documents, tendering and construction management of municipal rehabilitation and growth projects including roads, transitways, water and wastewater treatment facilities, sanitary and storm sewers, watermains, sidewalks, streetlights, structures, etc.
You are responsible for administering construction-related activities of several road rehabilitation projects such as Guiderail Upgrade, culvert replacement, and preventative maintenance programs such as Crack Sealing and Micro-Surfacing. You also: comment on designs and specifications; coordinate activities of the general contractors, sub-contractors, utility companies; oversee inspection staff; participate in the preparation of contracts for tendering; and act as a second-in-charge, as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of 2 year community college diploma in construction technology or related field leading to an Engineering Technician diploma
Minimum of 7 years of experience in a construction related field with 2 years of specialized experience in road maintenance/pavement rehabilitation
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES
Completion of Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) & Municipal Engineers Association (MEA) Construction Inspection and Bituminous Technology (Municipal Infrastructure Certification courses) or equivalent within timeframe determined by employer
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of Roadway Safety Manual (Book 7)
Knowledge of road rehabilitation and road pavement structure and construction standards
Processes for tendering and contracting work
Protocols for responding to councillor inquiries, dealing with the public
Principles of contract management including cost containment/control and reporting
Microcomputer applications in an engineering environment, including the utilization of spreadsheets, word processing, intra and internet
Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance
Must be familiar with all applicable health and safety legislation, have knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the work place, and have knowledge of appropriate actions to be taken in order to ensure the health and safety of staff in accordance with applicable legislation and city policies and procedures

Highly developed interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate both orally and in writing
Read and interpret engineering plans and drawings
