Job Summary

The Controller will plan and direct the day-to-day accounting operations of WaterStone, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, strong internal controls, and compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller leads the accounting team and plays a key role in supporting WaterStone’s mission of empowering generosity for Kingdom impact.

Compensation

This position offers a competitive base salary plus an annual bonus.

Supervisory Responsibilities

1. Manages the accounting staff responsible for financial reporting, billing, and budget preparation.

2. Hires accounting staff and conducts annual performance evaluations.

3. Coordinates training programs for new staff and identifies training needs for current accounting staff.

Responsibilities

1. Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, including reconciliation of the main bank account and clearing accounts.

2. Prepare and review audit schedules and serve as a primary point of contact for the annual independent audit.

3. Prepare General Fund financial statements and lead preparation of the Annual Budget.

4. Review and approve journal entries and other accounting entries prepared by accounting team members.

5. Calculate quarterly trust payments and oversee preparation of annual trust tax returns and Schedule K-1s.

6. Review posting of all investment statements and ensure all investment-related activity is reported correctly.

7. Oversee posting of contributions, purchases, sales, and adjustments related to complex assets, including real estate, partnerships, business interests, and notes.

8. Ensure all documentation related to complex assets is scanned, retained, and organized to support audit and accounting recordkeeping.

9. Maintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting policies in accordance with GAAP and ECFA standards.

10. Partner with the CFO on cash flow monitoring, financial analysis, and strategic planning.

11. Serve as backup to the Staff Accountant and other accounting team members as needed.

12. Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

1. Excellent management and supervisory skills.

2. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

3. Excellent organizational and time management skills.

4. Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting.

5. Proficient in accounting and tax preparation software.

6. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.

Qualifications/Education

1. Demonstrated agreement with WaterStone’s Mission, Vision, Values, and Statement of Faith.

2. Have a servant’s heart to help others, our clients, and WaterStone team members.

3. Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.

4. CPA certification highly desired.

5. 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with prior supervisory experience preferred.

6. Ability to think critically and independently.

7. Ability to manage multiple projects independently.

8. Able to sit in front of a computer for extended periods and perform repetitive hand motions.

Pay: $120,000.00 – $135,000.00 per year
