Controller Jobs in Canada at Tandem Consulting

Title: Controller

Company: Tandem Consulting

Location: Canada

This is a full-time, exclusive role. We are only considering candidates based in Canada who are not maintaining freelance or other employment commitments.

About Tandem Consulting

Tandem Consulting (tandemconsulting.ca) is a 100% cloud-based firm helping small-to-medium businesses and not-for-profits manage their financial operations and scale. We're a tight-knit, growing team — and that means we hire people who can hustle, pivot quickly, and wear multiple hats. Our controllers and bookkeepers want a challenge, bring well-rounded experience across bookkeeping, accounting, analysis, and tax, and are comfortable figuring things out on their own.

About This Role

You'll be the backbone of our financial operations across a portfolio of client accounts. This is a Controller role — we expect experience, proactivity, sound judgement, and a high standard of accuracy. You'll manage client files independently, hit deadlines, and deliver reliable work without being closely managed. High expectations, met with trust and autonomy — and a team behind you when you need it.

Unlike more siloed roles, our Controllers own the full process for their client portfolio: bookkeeping through to year-end, client communications, A/P, A/R, sales tax, ad-hoc analysis, and building better processes along the way. The role reports to the Senior Controller.

Some of the Responsibilities of the Role

  • Manage multiple client files simultaneously in a deadline-driven environment
  • Complete weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly bookkeeping with accuracy and proactive communication to clients and team members
  • Full-cycle bookkeeping and monthly financial preparation: deferred and prepaid schedules, bank reconciliations, inventory adjustments, and related entries
  • Prepare and maintain cash flow forecasts, inventory forecasts, and other strategic models; communicate observations and results to stakeholders
  • Conduct monthly variance analysis and ad-hoc reporting; develop a working understanding of each client's operations to provide meaningful insights
  • Process payables (with tools like Plooto, Float) and payroll
  • Build and maintain annual client budgets; identify and report on monthly variances
  • Field and respond to technical questions from clients and senior management
  • Prepare and file HST, PST, EHT, and WSIB returns
  • Prepare year-end packages and/or support clients' external auditors
  • Identify and implement AI-driven workflow improvements
  • Document workflows and SOPs; maintain and organize internal files
  • Other administrative and ad-hoc assignments as needed
  • Tech we use daily: Xero, QuickBooks Online, Hubdoc, Dext, Plooto, Float, Wagepoint, Slack, Google Workspace — plus client-side integrations like Shopify, Clio, and Amazon.

Your Skills and Qualifications

Experience:

  • 8+ years of full-cycle bookkeeping experience with complex clients
  • Prior experience in a cloud-based accounting practice or managing a portfolio of clients
  • Canadian payroll and sales tax compliance
  • Experience with e-commerce clients
  • Cloud accounting software, specifically Xero and its integrations
  • Experience working with a small team and able to self-learn

Software skills:

  • Xero (we are a Xero-first firm)
  • Wagepoint, Plooto, Shopify, Dext, Hubdoc, Float and others

Qualities:

  • Impeccable attention to detail and strong organizational habits
  • Disciplined, self-motivated, and a strong manager of your own time
  • Proactive communicator — especially in a remote setting
  • Solid grasp of Canadian accounting and compliance
  • Independent and resourceful; comfortable investigating issues with minimal direction
  • Dedicated — this role requires your full professional focus with an eagerness to help the firm grow

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or degree in accounting or business, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • Must reside and be eligible to work in Canada
  • Preference given to candidates located in Toronto, ON

Compensation: $52,500 – $75,000 CAD per year
