Job Summary
The Assistant Superintendent helps the Superintendent run landscape construction jobs day to day. This is a field-heavy role lots of time on job sites supporting foremen and crews, plus paperwork, tracking, and coordination work. The goal is to keep projects moving safely and on track so clients get peace of mind and the Superintendent has more time for client work and planning. This person steps in as backup when the Superintendent is away.
Essential Job Functions
- Act as backup for the Superintendent when away direct crews, handle issues on site, and keep work moving.
- Oversee safe and effective pesticide usage. QAL reporting: update monthly and maintain proper documentation.
- Schedule post-construction maintenance. Lead turnover walks, complete paperwork, and hand jobs off cleanly to the maintenance team.
- Handle job field paperwork: provide foremen with job labor budget, Don Mario analysis, Maintenance start-stop form. Ensure completion of as-builts and update T&M; tickets (for office review).
- Create initial irrigation material buyout lists from the plans. Help order materials, check deliveries, and make sure the right items get installed.
- Visit job sites regularly to support and coach foremen. Make sure crews have the right equipment, understand the work, and follow plans and safety rules.
- Ensure labor budget compliance.
- Work daily with the Superintendent and Project Management team on progress, labor, schedules, deliveries, and problems.
- Keep clear records and communicate well. (Attend and contribute to Ops Meeting, Supers Meeting, and Foremen’s Meeting).
- Use Microsoft 365 (Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, Excel) for communication, calendar, documents, and tracking. Do other duties as needed
LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT
- Follow and promote LDI values, rules, and mission on every job and with every crew.
- Coach foremen and crews on safety, quality, and efficient work practices. Help them grow in their roles.
- Make sure equipment and tools are used properly and safely on all projects.
- Do all work and paperwork the right way, following LDI policies and best practices.
SAFETY
- Follow all LDI safety policies and OSHA rules. Keep productivity and quality high. Report injuries right away to the Superintendent and HR.
- Make sure all field workers wear the right uniform and PPE on every jobsite visit.
- Build a safe work culture by coaching crews during site visits and reviewing daily work.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong at organizing paperwork, details, and follow-up. Nothing slips through the cracks.
- Can read construction plans and create material buyout lists (especially irrigation).
- Comfortable with Microsoft 365 tools (Outlook, SharePoint, Excel, Teams) for tracking and communication.
- Understands production rates, labor tracking, and basic scheduling.
- Can work independently across many job sites, manage priorities, and make good decisions when filling in for theSuperintendent.
- Gets along well with foremen and crews. Can coach and support them in a positive way.
- Willing to get or already has a QAL license and knows (or can learn) pesticide tracking rules in California.
- Flexible schedule overtime, weekends, and evenings as the work requires.
Education / Experience / Licenses
- 3+ years of landscape construction or similar field experience, with strength in documentation, tracking, or supportingforemen.
- Valid California driver’s license with clean record. Reliable vehicle to drive between multiple LA/Ventura job sites.
- QAL (Qualified Applicator License) or ready to get one quickly.
- OSHA 10 or 30 and current First Aid/CPR certification.
- Experience with maintenance handoffs, as-builts, or T&M; paperwork is a plus.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements
- Field-heavy role with lots of time on active job sites across the LA/Ventura area, plus some documentation and officecoordination.
- Work around construction sites, traffic, and water. Work in heat (over 100°F), sun, and all weather.
- Work 8+ hours/day, 5+ days/week with overtime, weekends, and evenings as needed.
- Lift and carry up to 40 lbs, walk job sites, climb, bend, and do physical inspections.
- Drive between multiple job sites daily. Comfortable in a fast-moving construction environment.
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPIs)
- QAL and pesticide records are always accurate, current, and complete.
- Maintenance turnovers happen on time with clean paperwork and very few punch list items.
- Job paperwork (Don Mario’s, handoffs, as-builts, T&M;) is collected and passed along correctly and on time.
- Irrigation buyout lists are accurate and help keep material costs under control.
- Regular jobsite visits that help foremen do better work and catch problems early.
- Strong backup performance projects keep running smoothly when the Superintendent is away.
Pay: $20.00 – $25.00 per hour
