Overview
Join our dynamic team as a Choker Setter and become a vital part of our tree care and forestry operations! In this role, you’ll be responsible for setting chokers—specialized cables used to lift, move, and secure logs and timber—ensuring safe and efficient handling of heavy materials. You’ll work closely with equipment operators and ground crews to facilitate smooth operations while adhering to safety standards. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to develop hands-on skills in heavy equipment operation, tree care, and rigging within a fast-paced environment that values teamwork and precision.
Responsibilities
- Safely attach and adjust chokers around logs or timber using rigging techniques to prepare for lifting or hauling
- Operate loaders, excavators, or other heavy equipment such as Caterpillar machinery to position logs for choker setting
- Coordinate with tree care teams to identify the best rigging points and ensure proper handling during tree trimming or removal projects
- Use GPS technology to assist in precise positioning of logs and ensure accurate placement during transportation
- Perform heavy lifting tasks safely, utilizing proper techniques and equipment to prevent injury or damage
- Assist with climbing trees when necessary for rigging or setting chokers in challenging locations
- Maintain clear communication with team members during operations to ensure safety protocols are followed at all times
Skills
- Strong mechanical knowledge related to heavy equipment and rigging systems
- Experience operating loaders, excavators, and other large machinery such as Caterpillar models
- Ability to perform tree care tasks including trimming, climbing, and rigging techniques
- Proficiency in bucket operation for lifting materials at various heights or positions
- Knowledge of GPS systems for precise equipment placement and logging data
- Physical strength for heavy lifting tasks and the stamina required for extended periods of outdoor work
- Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) preferred for transporting equipment or materials
- Familiarity with safety standards related to heavy equipment operation, tree work, and industrial rigging
