The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus. The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.

Length of term: May 4, 2026 – April 30, 2027
Hours per week: 20
Compensation: $21.00 per hour
Position Purpose
The Associate Vice-President, Sustainability is responsible for the implementation and monitoring of the AMS’s sustainability-related operations, initiatives, and projects. They are also responsible for reaching targets and goals set out in the AMS Sustainable Action Plan (ASAP) and setting out annual priorities that the AMS should be achieving for its respective year. They are also in charge of attending meetings and liaising with multiple on-campus sustainability groups and coordinating sustainability efforts with them. In addition, they are the Chair of the Sustainability Subcommittee, which oversees the sustainability progress of the AMS’s internal operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate with the Vice-President Administration on the annual sustainability priorities for the AMS
- Initiate and oversee student research projects (through working with SEEDS, interested staff, faculty and graduate students)
- Build partnerships and work with student groups, clubs and resource groups
- Work with the Communications Department to communicate sustainability initiatives and progress reports to the membership
- Chair the AMS Sustainability Subcommittee and host AMS sustainability week
- Attend AMS and UBC committee meetings related to sustainability such as Climate Action 2030, Zero Waste, and more
- Sits on the Sustainability Project Fund Subcommittee and attend the Finance Committee for SPF-related matters as needed
- Coordinate with the Vice-President Administration and senior managers to help implement sustainability initiatives in the AMS businesses
- Work with UBC SEEDS Coordinator and other project members to implement and evaluate SEEDS projects
- Liaise with the UBC Sustainability Office, other campus organizations and UBC departments
- Review the AMS Sustainable Action Plan to ensure that it is up-to-date and provide recommendations to update it when necessary
- Coordinate with the Vice-President Administration to complete an annual report on the AMS’s sustainability and present the following to AMS Council:
- Annual sustainability priorities for actions and projects no later than the last Council meeting in June
- An update on the fulfillment of the sustainability priorities no later than the last Council meeting in October
- An annual sustainability report no later than the last Council meeting in March
- Working with the AMS mission statement and values to operate a successful department
- Other duties as required
Qualifications and Experience
- Must be a currently registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges, with a preference in a program focused on environment, sustainability or conservation
- May not be an executive of an AMS club, constituency or resource group
- Broad knowledge and a passion for environmental, social, and economic sustainability issues and campus environmental programs at UBC or other universities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience managing staff or coordinating volunteers is preferred
- Strong initiative and able to work with minimal supervision
- Able to work individually and collaboratively
- Creative and flexible
- Professional conduct
- Experience in policy implementation is an asset
- Facilitation skills is an asset
- Basic knowledge of the UBC community and operating environment is an asset
- Comfortable working within an anti-oppression framework to create a positive space for everyone
- Understanding of the AMS organization and operations an asset
