UBC Geering Up Engineering Outreach is the flagship outreach program of the University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Applied Science. Geering Up School Programs promote science, engineering, math, and technology to children and youth in British Columbia through fun, innovative and hands-on experiments and projects. In alignment with Applied Science’s goal of student recruitment, Geering Up strives to reach all children and youth, regardless of gender, ethnicity, culture or socio-economic status, with special outreach for those groups traditionally underrepresented in science and engineering.

Geering Up provides valuable work experience to its employees, and enriches the university and community. Geering Up Camps Programs are well-established with a 31-year history, and a large returning clientele that grows every year. Geering Up School Programs reach over 27,000 youth a year through a team of 200 student & professional staff working across 40+ communities.

The Assistant Manager, Geering Up School Programs leads the administration, operational planning and management, communications, and strategic plan of the Geering Up School Programs. Key duties include managing relationships with school boards, overseeing the program budget, and seeking out opportunities for program growth.

Organizational Status

The Assistant Manager, Geering Up School Programs reports to the Senior Manager, Geering Up & Outreach. This position oversees a staff team including the Geering Up School Programs Coordinator, Geering Up Quantum Programs Coordinator, student employees and volunteers.

Due to the nature of the work, vacations are limited during the months of July and August; and are generally restricted in May and June. Working hours will be typically Monday to Friday and will reflect operational hours as required. Ability to travel to other locations in BC and other remote work locations as required.

Work Performed

  • Manage the Geering Up School Programs and special activities, ensuring that its work aligns with the mandate and mission of the Geering Up organization as a whole, and Applied Science outreach goals.

  • Responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Geering Up school-based programs and services such as in-school workshops and teacher training programs. Provides supervisory oversight to the Geering Up teacher professional development, school workshops programs and Geering Up Quantum Computing programs.

  • Manage an annual budget for school programs and special activities of $600,000; conduct market research to evaluate program competitiveness, plan and implement cost-saving measures, and prepare monthly reports on budget health for the Senior Manager, Geering Up & Outreach.

  • Create systems to facilitate the delivery of school outreach programs in communities across BC through a team of over 16-20student staff and 3-4 hourly professional staff annually delivering 200,000 hours of face-to-face programming.

  • Develop, implement and evaluate administrative policies, procedures, and practices for the efficient operation and administration of Geering Up School Programs.

  • Responsible for full-cycle recruitment of Geering Up School Programs student staff and volunteers. Identifies staffing requirements, schedules and conducts interviews, approves offer letters and manages performance and development of staff; liaising with APSC Human Resources and the Senior Manager, Geering Up & Outreach and Administration as needed.

  • Responsible for the hiring, training, supervision, performance management, discipline and termination of direct reports working with APSC Human Resources when required. Provides oversight to indirect reports. Develop staff training initiatives to ensure effective orientation, team building, ongoing development and retention of staff.

  • Help secure funding to continue to provide existing programs and services and expand offerings. This may include being responsible for full-cycle of grant applications with external stakeholders including Provincial and Federal government.
