About the job
In this role, you will:
- Lead and carry out scientific analysis of air quality data to understand environmental and health impacts and support sound decision-making.
- Design, coordinate, and oversee air quality monitoring studies, ensuring data is accurate, reliable, and scientifically defensible.
- Provide expert scientific advice on air quality issues to support compliance, environmental protection, and emergency response situations.
- Interpret and apply environmental legislation, policies, and standards to assess impacts and support approvals, enforcement, and hearings.
- Communicate complex scientific findings clearly through reports, briefings, and professional advice to colleagues, partners, and stakeholders.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
- You have a post-secondary degree from an accredited university with specialization in disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Atmospheric Sciences or Mathematics.
- The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid G license or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver’s license upon being hired.
Scientific Expertise:
- In-depth knowledge of air quality assessment principles, atmospheric dispersion, monitoring theory, and environmental impact evaluation.
- Ability to apply scientific theory (e.g., chemistry, physics, atmospheric science) to complex, real-world air quality issues.
- Capacity to evaluate emerging science, technologies, and methodologies and integrate them into air quality assessment practices.
Analytical, Data Interpretation, and Scientific Judgment
- Skills Strong analytical skills to validate, interpret, and synthesize large and complex datasets using statistical and modelling tools.
- Ability to identify data anomalies, assess data integrity, and determine scientific validity.
- Sound judgment in assessing environmental and human health risks and determining appropriate responses or recommendations.
Environmental Compliance and Policy Knowledge
- Knowledge of environmental legislation, approvals processes, air quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to assess compliance and non-compliance within legal and policy frameworks.
- Capacity to explain, defend, and apply legislative and policy interpretations in professional, regulatory, or quasi-judicial contexts.
Communication and Advisory Skills
- Strong written communication skills to prepare clear, accurate technical reports, recommendations, and briefing materials.
- Effective verbal communication skills to explain scientific findings to stakeholders with varying levels of technical expertise.
- Ability to present and defend scientific opinions in formal settings (e.g., hearings, meetings, or expert testimony).
Leadership, Collaboration, and Professional Influence
- Demonstrated ability to lead or guide scientific work, coordinate activities, and support team-based outcomes.
- Interpersonal skills to influence, advise, and work constructively with stakeholders holding diverse or conflicting perspectives.
- Professional approach to resolving complex issues through collaboration, evidence-based reasoning, and consensus-building.
