Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced AI Automation Developer to join our team as a core technical builder. This role is responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining AI-powered automations and intelligent workflows for Hypelocal's diverse client base.
You will take ownership of the day-to-day automation development workload — building everything from deterministic workflows and AI-integrated automations to agentic systems, chatbots, AI agents, and custom micro applications. This hire is critical to scaling our AI automation service line and freeing up executive leadership to pursue larger deals and digital product development.
This is not a junior role. You need to be comfortable working across no-code platforms, AI APIs, and custom code — often in the same project.
Types of AI Automations You Will Build
Hypelocal delivers six distinct classes of automation, each matched to the complexity and decision-making requirements of the process being automated:
- Standard Automation (Deterministic Workflows) — Rule-based, predictable workflows that execute the same logic every time. Ideal for data syncing, notifications, CRM updates, and routine operational tasks.
- AI-Integrated Automation — Deterministic workflows enhanced with AI steps for tasks requiring language understanding, classification, summarization, or content generation. Combines structured automation reliability with AI reasoning flexibility.
- Agentic Systems — AI systems that reason, plan, and take multi-step action autonomously within defined guardrails. Used for complex processes where steps cannot be fully predetermined.
- Chatbots — Conversational interfaces built on custom knowledge bases and engineered prompts to answer questions, gather information, and serve specific use cases. Can trigger and run other automations.
- AI Agents — Full AI-powered process automation where agents are equipped with instructions, knowledge, and tools to complete work end-to-end. Includes prompt engineering for reliable execution and agent-to-agent handoff scenarios (multi-agent systems).
- Custom Micro Applications — Purpose-built applications leveraging APIs and MCP (Model Context Protocol) for requirements that fall outside the capabilities of standard orchestration platforms.
Key Responsibilities
Automation Development & Deployment
- Design, build, test, and deploy AI-powered automations and workflows for clients across industries (financial services, SaaS, eCommerce, professional services, and more)
- Develop end-to-end automation solutions using Zapier as the primary orchestration platform
- Integrate AI models (Claude, OpenAI API) into automation workflows for intelligent data processing, content generation, classification, and decision-making
- Build custom micro applications and serverless functions when requirements exceed standard orchestration capabilities
- Develop and configure chatbots, AI agents, and multi-agent systems with proper prompt engineering and guardrails
- Connect disparate software systems, enabling seamless data transfer and synchronization across client platforms (CRMs, marketing tools, analytics, etc.)
Technical Architecture & Problem Solving
- Assess client business processes and identify opportunities for automation and AI integration
- Architect automation solutions that balance complexity, reliability, and maintainability
- Make informed decisions on build approach: Zapier vs. Claude Skills/MCP vs. custom application development
- Work with REST APIs, webhooks, and OAuth integrations to connect platforms that lack native Zapier apps
- Manage API keys, environment variables, and technical configurations across client environments
- Troubleshoot and debug complex multi-step automations and AI integrations
Documentation & Client Enablement
- Create comprehensive documentation for every deployed workflow, including SOPs
- Produce video walkthroughs, training materials, and onboarding guides for client teams
- Ensure client teams retain full clarity on how each system operates
Ongoing Support & Optimization
- Provide ongoing issue resolution, monitoring, and troubleshooting for deployed automations
- Continuously optimize, maintain, and iterate on deployed systems as client businesses evolve and platforms change
- Stay current with AI and automation developments and proactively identify new opportunities for clients and internal operations
Required Qualifications
Technical Skills
- 3+ years of hands-on experience building automations and integrations (Zapier, Make, or similar platforms)
- Strong proficiency with Zapier — including multi-step Zaps, Paths, Filters, Formatters, Code steps (JavaScript/Python), Webhooks, Zapier Tables, and Zapier Interfaces
- Working experience with AI/LLM APIs — specifically OpenAI (GPT-4, GPT-4o) and/or Anthropic (Claude). Must understand prompt engineering, token management, and model selection
- API integration experience — comfortable working with REST APIs, OAuth 2.0, webhooks, and custom HTTP requests
- Programming fundamentals — proficiency in JavaScript and/or Python for writing custom code steps, serverless functions, and micro applications
- CRM and marketing platform experience — familiarity with HubSpot, Salesforce, Google Sheets, Looker Studio, or similar tools
- Understanding of MCP (Model Context Protocol) and how to build or leverage MCP servers for AI tool connectivity
Professional Skills
- Ability to assess business processes and translate them into scalable automation solutions
- Strong problem-solving skills and comfort working through ambiguous technical challenges
- Excellent documentation and communication skills — you will create SOPs, training videos, and client-facing materials
- Self-starter with a proactive mindset who can work independently in a fast-paced, remote environment
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality in every deployment
- Ability to manage multiple client projects simultaneously with clear prioritization
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience building agentic systems and multi-agent architectures(agent-to-agent handoffs, tool-equipped agents)
- Experience with Cursor, Claude Code, or similar AI-assisted development environments
- Familiarity with Node.js, Fastify, React, or modern web development frameworks
- Experience developing custom chatbots with knowledge retrieval and conversational AI
- Background working in an agency environment or managing multiple client engagements
- Experience with financial services platforms (Salesforce Financial Services Cloud, Black Diamond, eMoney, etc.)
- Familiarity with SEO tools and marketing technology stacks
- Understanding of data governanc, clean data practices, and CRM hygiene
- Zapier certification or equivalent platform certifications
- Experience with Google Cloud Platform, AWS Lambda, or other serverless infrastructure
What Success Looks Like
- First 30 Days: Onboard to Hypelocal systems (Notion, Zapier, Slack, AI tools), review existing automations and client projects, complete AI tools training, and begin contributing to active automation builds under guidance.
- First 60 Days: Independently manage automation development for assigned client projects end-to-end. Deliver 2–3 completed automation projects with full documentation.
- First 90 Days: Own the full automation development pipeline. Proactively identify improvement opportunities across client accounts. Contribute to internal process automation and digital product development. Begin handling client-facing strategy calls alongside leadership.
