Primary function

Are you going to law school so you can work within the fields of social justice or public interest and make a real difference in the lives of those who are the most vulnerable? LAO invests in and fosters the long-term development of its lawyers – a process that starts with the summering and articling experience. Students are provided with the opportunity to experience different areas of law, giving you a broad articling experience in social justice.

Home location: Provincial Office (20 Dundas St. W.)

Compensation: $78,265.25 per annum prorated for 10 months plus benefits.

Area of Search: Students eligible to article in 2027-28

Assignment: 10-month placement, expected start date will be in July 2027

Reporting to: Associate Vice President, Indigenous Services

This position is 100% onsite at the location listed above. The successful candidate(s) must be able to commute to the office(s) and work in person on a full‑time basis.


Key accountabilities


Indigenous Services Department:

The Indigenous Services Department provides strategic direction and expertise for the co-ordination, development and delivery of high-quality legal services provided to First Nation, Métis and Inuit clients by LAO and service providers. This is done in collaboration with Indigenous communities and service providers.

The Indigenous Services Department is a newly created department (April 2024) within LAO and has a mandate to drive LAO’s commitment to addressing the over-representation of Indigenous peoples within the justice system by removing barriers and increasing access to high quality legal aid services throughout Ontario.

Much of the initial work of the Indigenous Services Department will be focused on:

  • Building relationships with Indigenous clients and communities, based on trust and mutual respect
  • Identifying, addressing and removing barriers to increase opportunities to enhance and support Indigenous communities, service providers, clients, and staff in the delivery of LAO services
  • Providing strategic direction within LAO to ensure it is upholding its commitments to Truth and Reconciliation
  • Increasing LAO’s understanding, competency and capacity of providing culturally appropriate services to Indigenous clients through education, training and knowledge building


Required skills & experience

  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge, commitment to and understanding of First Nation, Métis and Inuit communities including their needs, cultures, and historical experiences within the justice system;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice or public interest work.
  • Demonstrated excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Solid understanding of the mission of Legal Aid Ontario
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, decolonization and reconciliation, and to embedding these principles within the work environment

Onboarding & training

o Criminal law and family law training emphasizing interactive, experiential learning, including case studies, role-playing, and soft skill development.
o A courthouse visit allowed articling students to shadow our lawyers and observe them in action.
o Virtual court sessions offered a chance to watch how virtual court operates, followed by guided walkthroughs of the process with our instructors.

Licensing fees

  • LAO pays 100% of the Law Society licensing fees including: application fee, barrister licensing examination, solicitor licensing examination, articling program/LPP/IPC fee, call to the bar fee.


Vacation

  • Ten days of paid time off during the articling period in accordance with the LSO requirement
  • All statutory holidays, and a day of observance for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Remembrance Day and Easter Monday
